The Price We Pay To Store “Old Stuff”

What is the cost of storing stuff within you that you no longer need? What is it that you can’t let go of? Are you willing to keep paying the price?

My family owns a self-storage business in a small town in the Southern Adirondacks. Ideally, this is a place to safekeep personal possessions which no longer have a place or need in a home, but have a value too great to sell or pass on in the moment. In actuality, it often is a place filled with boxed up good intentions, carefully preserved old memories, and junk which no longer has any use….yet, people willingly pay for space to store stuff they no longer want or need; while others abandon the contents, leaving someone else to weed through the mess.

Just like self-storage units, our minds, hearts and bodies store experiences, thoughts, and beliefs that have great value. These “possessions” have shaped our lives and made us who we are up to this moment. However, we also store experiences, thoughts, and beliefs that no longer bring joy, value, or vitality to our lives. They eventually become obstacles to work around that are just taking up space. Space we could fill with what we truly desire for ourselves and want in our lives. Yet, we hold onto “old versions” of ourselves and our internal “possessions”, as if letting go of what no longer serves us equates to giving up a part of who we are. This could not be further from the truth.

Until we take make the time to do an “internal inventory” of what we are storing in our minds, hearts, and bodies, we will keep holding on to and paying a price for that which no longer brings joy, value, or vitality to our lives. This price actually robs our vitality and can show up in the form of chronic illness, unfulfilling employment or relationships, false or self-limiting beliefs, and even addiction. Essentially, we end up paying to stay stuck in a version of ourselves that no longer exists…or wants to.

When we can no longer afford to pay the price, we are left with two choices:

  1. Give up on ourselves; leaving a mess for others to weed through, or

  2. Sort through what we’ve been holding on to and let go of what no longer brings joy, value, or vitality to our lives; ultimately, empowering ourselves to live a life true to our authentic selves.
